My Longest Surviving Tree
I was born in Gaspe, Quebec. After the First World War my father was given a woodlot of a few thousand acres from the Canadian government. As a child I could name every tree in the forest. As I grew up, eventually I moved to London, Ontario. Each summer, when I would go back to Gaspe to visit, I always took a walk in the forest. One summer I pulled up a little twig, put it in an empty tomato can and brought it back to London and set it in my garden. After two years, I transplanted it to the back yard. I let it grow there for 15 years and then replanted it to the front yard where it has been growing for over 20 years. The birds love my tree. Every spring, two mourning doves build their nest there. I call it the Bird's Nest Hotel. Every bird in the forest visits the hotel. Since it has been replanted 4 times, I call it my longest surviving tree.
